Albert Large was born in Merryworth, Kent in November 1857 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in February 1877. A Stoker by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (March 1881 to March 1883), he was finally pensioned ashore as a Leading Stoker 1st Class in March 1897
