Captain Hugh Stanley Cheshire was an engineer from the Assam-Bengal Railway prior to joining Lumsden’s Horse. He participated in the operations in the Cape Colony and Orange Free State but became ill with fever, was hospitalized and subsequently invalided to England after the surrender of Pretoria. During the Great War he served as an officer in the I.A.R.O. and Sappers & Miners. Later he served in the auxiliary forces of India and the Special Constabulary.
