Francis Curl was born at Berkhampstead on 22 August 1878 and joined the Metropolitan Police on 2 April 1900 as a P.C. in “C” Division. He transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department in February 1914 and, in December of that year, he joined Army Intelligence on the nominal strength of the 10th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. One of the ‘Hush-Hush Brigade’ he went to France on 19 December 1914 where he served until medically discharged on 26 October 1918. He rejoined the Police in December 1919 and finally retired on pension as a Sergeant in the Portsmouth Division (C.I.D.) on 25 June 1925.
