Ex J. Lawson Whalley Collection 1877.
Awarded for a serious fire at the house of Mr J. N. Barrett, 9 Great Cumberland Street, London. Fire Escape Conductor Elsden first saved a little girl and a young woman from the second floor, and then saved the French governess from the back of the house. A further ten people, including Mrs Barrett, were saved by other rescuers, although Mr Barrett and his eldest daughter perished in the flames. Sold with further details including lengthy reports copied from The Times.
