Joseph Renton was born at Paisley, Renfrewshire in August 1884 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in April 1903. Joining H.M.S. Natal as a Leading Seaman in May 1910, he went on to earn the Delhi Durbar Medal in the following year, one of approximately 250 such awards to the Royal Navy - less than 20 of them went to the men of the Natal. Advanced to Petty Officer in August 1913, Renton joined the battleship Implacable and served in her until April 1916, being present in operations off the Dardanelles between 1915-16. His next appointment was in the monitor Erebus between August 1916 and September 1917, during which period he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal and served off the Belgian coast. Renton was commissioned as a Gunner, R.N., in October 1917 but the remainder of his career, and 1939-45 service, remains unresearched.
