Henry Thomas Carter Barnett was born in Lechlade, near Gloucester. A Bricklayer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Engineers at York on 16 October 1880, aged 20 years, 3 months. Awarded the Royal Engineers Fowke Medal in 1890. He served abroad in Egypt, August 1882-September 1885 - being present at Kassassin, El Teb, Tamaai and Kirbekan. He then served in Sierra Leone, October 1891-July 1892; Bermuda, December 1899-November 1902; Sierra Leone, September 1907-October 1908. He attained the rank of Serjeant-Major in November 1899. As Serjeant-Major (Foreman of Works) he was discharged at Chatham on 15 July 1910 having reached the statutory age limit. Awarded the M.S.M. per Army Order 121 of 1943. Latterly living at 12 Marlborough Road, Gillingham, Kent, he died on 11 July 1946, aged 86 years.
