William (Frederick) Everett was born at Maidstone, Kent and originally enlisted in the 9th Lancers in March 1879, aged 15 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in March 1885, and advanced to Lance-Corporal and Trumpeter in February 1886, he sometime thereafter transferred to the 3rd Dragoon Guards, with whom he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. in the rank of Sergeant-Trumpeter in July 1896. As it transpired, this was his only medal entitlement and he was discharged at Curragh in April 1902, then being described as a ‘Good musician’ with an ‘Exemplary’ character.
