George Woodward was born in Chelsea, London and enlisted in the 9th Lancers in November 1831, aged 16 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in May 1837 and advanced to Corporal in April 1842, he was present at the Battle of Sobraon in February 1846, and, as a recently promoted Trumpet-Major, in the Punjab operations of 1848-49, including the passage of the Chenab and the Battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat. Woodward, who reverted to the rank of Sergeant on being invalided home in February 1851, was awarded his Army L.S. & G.C. in January 1858 and was discharged in November 1857, due to disabilities caused by ‘exposure in the service and climate.’
