Samuel Holloway first entered the French theatre of war as a Private in the 1st Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment. He appears in Surrender Be Damned, in which he describes an ammunition-re-supply sortie to the front line at night:
‘In the night a party of about 40, including myself, had to do the same thing, but there was not so much danger, as we could only be seen when the Germans sent up one of their starlights, which made the darkness as bright as day. When one of these went up, down we went flat on the ground. We could hear the bullets whistling about us like leaves falling in the autumn but we all returned safely.’
