Thomas Harold Ellworthy Land Smale first entered the French theatre of war as a Private in the Monmouthshires in mid-February 1915. Subsequently commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps in the same year, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in late 1917 and qualified as a pilot. He transferred to the Unemployed List in June 1919; sold with an original lid of the card box of issue for one of his campaign medals, quite possibly his late issue 1914-15 Star (MIC states sent on 8 December 1924).

Frederick Jones first entered the French theatre of war in mid-February 1915 and may well be the casualty reported in the
Free Press of Monmouthshire on Friday 4 June of the same year, but his service number is given as ‘2366’, as indeed it is in the official Commonwealth War Graves Register; sold with further information.

John Scanlan first entered the French theatre of war as a Private in the 1st Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment in mid-February 1915. His
MIC entry further reveals that he latterly served in the Royal Engineers and that he was discharged in January 1919.

William J. Skyrme first entered the French theatre of war as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment in early November 1914 but was subsequently discharged on 13 March 1916 under the Military Service Act of that year.d
