Collection
James McLean was born at Comrie, County Perth in about March 1842. He enlisted into the 42nd Highlanders on 19 June 1856. He served with the regiment in the Indian Mutiny and again in the Ashantee War. In the latter, in the action at Amoaful, he was slightly wounded in the left shoulder and severely wounded in the right eye which resulted in its loss. He attained the rank of Colour Serjeant in 1874. In 1875 he transferred to the Royal Perthshire Militia and was discharged on a pension in 1879. Sold with copied service papers and other research.
