Mervyn Somerset Thomas was born in 1900 and entered the Royal Naval College, Osborne in 1914. Towards the end of the War he served as a Midshipman aboard the battleship H.M.S.
Queen Elizabeth and soon after the War, he served on the battlecruiser H.M.S. New Zealand on her world cruise. Subsequently, Thomas served mostly on destroyers. Promoted Commander in 1936, he served in the Mediterranean waters off Palestine. With the outbreak of War, he was Captain of the destroyer H.M.S. Dainty. He received the D.S.O. for an exploit in June 1940 when the Dainty sank three Italian submarines off Crete. The Dainty was later sunk by enemy aircraft. Then, with the exception of 18 months during 1942-43, when in command of the R.N. Air Station at Yeovilton, he served in the Mediterranean, and was Maintainance Captain to Flag Officer Levant Eastern Mediterranean. He was awarded the Greek War Cross in 1942 for services rendered in Greek waters. In 1945 he was appointed Captain in Charge of Portland. Captain Thomas died on 20 August 1947.
