Hussar Henry Shulze was awarded the Guelphic Medal for Bravery at the battle of the Göhrde, 16 September 1813, and at Waterloo, 18 June 1815. The translation of his citation reads:

‘From the beginning of the battle he was on patrol together with a Corporal and three Hussars against the French left wing. They met with an enemy infantry unit which they immediately attacked, and killed or captured most of them. In this incident Hussar Schulze performed special gallantry. He saved his Corporal who had fallen into the hands of the enemy. He was also wounded at Waterloo but refused to leave the field of battle.’ (Ref Von Wissel p255)

The 3rd Hussars of the King’s German Legion formed part of the Army of General Wallmoden during his campaign in the North of Germany during 1813-14, and were particularly distinguished at the battle of the Göhrde on 16 September 1813, when they charged and broke three squares of French infantry. The French losses in this action amounted to nearly two thousand men killed and wounded, besides fifteen hundred prisoners. Amongst the allied corps, the 3rd Hussars were the principal sufferers, with eight officers and 75 men killed or wounded.

Henry Shulze also received the M.G.S. medal, with clasp for Sahagun & Benevente, which was sold by Spink in 1984.
