George Baillie Farrington was born at Muttra on 1 July 1837, son of Major-General John James Farrington, Bengal Artillery. He was educated at Kensington Grammar School, and Mr Howard’s of St John’s Wood, 1847-54. He was accepted by the Examiners of the Military Seminary at Addiscombe for direct entry as a Cadet, 3 April 1855. He arrived at Madras on 26 June 1855, via the ‘overland’ route, and was there posted to the 47th Madras Native Infantry. He served with the 47th N.I. during the Indian Mutiny as part of the Bellary Field Force, under the command of Major J. E. Hughes, 47th M.N.I., and was present at the capture of the town and fort of Copul on 1 June 1858 (Medal). His regiment being disbanded in 1862, Farrington served with the 24th Madras N.I. until 23 August 1863, and thereafter with the Hyderabad Contingent Cavalry for the remainder of his service, latterly as second-in-command of the 1st Cavalry H.C. He retired with the Honorary rank of Colonel on 15 January 1885, and died in London on 25 June 1902, aged 64 years.
