A Collection of Medals to the Indian Police

An unusual post-war Indian Police Medal group of seven awarded to Inspector Victor Wavell, Calcutta Police and Auxiliary Forces of India, late Royal Marine Light Infantry and 7th Dragoon Guards

Indian Police Medal, G.VI.R, for Meritorious Service (Victor Wavell, Inspr., Calcutta Police); British War Medal 1914-20 (PO. 1761-S Pte. V. Wavell, R.M.L.I.); Victory Medal 1914-19 (PO. 1761-S Pte. V. Wavell, R.M.L.I.), renamed; General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Iraq (D-33143 Pte. V. Wavell, 7-D. Gds.); Indian Independence 1950, police issue, unnamed; Efficiency Medal, G.V.R., India (Pte. V. Wavell, Cal. & Presy. BN. A.F.I.); St. John Service Medal (3124 V. Wavell, Cal. Police S.J.A.B.O 1942), mounted for display in velvet tray apparently in the order once worn, the first and last with one or two official corrections, somewhat polished, thus nearly very fine or better (7) £450-550

I.P.M. Gazette of India 1 January 1947. ‘Victor Wavell, Inspector, Calcutta Police, Bengal.’

Victor Wavell, who was born in November 1898, enlisted under age at Newport on the Isle of Wight in September 1916, and was placed on the Army Reserve. Mobilised a few weeks later with an appointment in the Berkshire Regiment, he quickly transferred to the Royal Marine Light Infantry, in which capacity he appears to have served only in the U.K. prior to being discharged in March 1917 - thereby questioning his entitlement to the above described, renamed Victory Medal. Of his subsequent services in the 7th Dragoon Guards, and the Indian Police, little is known.
