M.I.D. London Gazette 19 September 1946. ‘... in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Burma.’ ‘5620515 W.O.II L. S. W. Hancock [Devon R.]’

Lord Spencer Wright Hancock was born in Wandsworth, London, on 14 February 1920, the son of Horace Herbert and Nelly Hancock. Employed as a Barman, he attested for the Territorials - 6th Battalion Devonshire Regiment, at Saunton on 26 April 1939. Embodied into the Regular Army with the 9th Battalion Devonshire Regiment in September 1939. Served in India, January-June 1942; Ceylon, June 1942-July 1943; India, July 1943-December 1945; Singapore, December 1945-December 1946. Appointed R.S.M. in November 1944. For his wartime services he was mentioned in despatches. Awarded the Efficiency Medal by A.O.48 of 1946. Returning home, he was discharged to class ‘Z’ reserves on 29 June 1947. Initially employed as a Barman at the Osborne Hotel, Barnstaple. He married Lily May Lake at Barnstaple on 19 November 1947. Later employed as an officer in the Federation of Malay Police. Latterly employed as an Estate Agent, living at 25 Lichfield Court, Sheen Road, Richmond, he committed suicide, the balance of his mind being disturbed, by taking mandrax poison, on 23 June 1969.
