A Group of Medals Associated with the Artist Sir George Frampton

Sir George James Frampton, RA

Born in St John’s Wood, London, sculptor and craftsman, trained at the Lambeth School of Art under W.S. Frith and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1881 to 1887, in the latter year winning the Academy’s Gold Medal and £200. Between 1888 and 1890 he studied under Antonin Mercié in Paris and subsequently was one of the principal figures in the arts and crafts movement in England. During his lengthy career he was elected A.R.A. in 1894 and R.A. in 1902, was knighted in 1908 and served as president of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, 1911-12. Among his many statues in England and throughout the world are several memorials of Victoria and the lions at the entrance to the exterior of the British Museum.
