John Herd was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Employed as a Labourer and a member of the 1st Cheshire Royal Engineers, he attested for the Dragoons at Birkenhead on 1st March 1899, aged 18 years, 8 months. Posted to the 3rd Dragoon Guards, he served in South Africa, January 1901-August 1904, before transferring to the Army Reserve in March 1907. He was discharged having completed his service on 28 February 1911. With copied service papers and notes.
