William Charles Rabbitts (as spelt on service papers) was born in Cowes, Isle of Wight. A Steward by occupation and a member of the 1st Hants Volunteer Artillery, he attested for short service in the Hussars of the Line at Southampton, 26 June 1900. Posted to the 10th Hussars, he served in South Africa, June 1901-February 1902. He was accidentally wounded at Clanwilliam, 5 December 1901, when he shot himself in the left foot. Nonetheless, he was able to continue his military career and served with the regiment in India, January 1903-October 1905. Rabbitts then returned home to serve with the 18th Hussars until transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1908. He was discharged having completed his period of service on 25 June 1912.
