William Fifield was born in Wootton-under-Edge, Bristol, Gloucestershire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (Militia), he attested for the South Wales Borderers on 15 October 1889, aged 18 years, 1 month. He served in South Africa, January 1900-February 1901, being invalided to England. Discharged in January 1906. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
