Frederick Charles Brown was born near Halstead, Essex. A Sawyer by occupation, he attested for the Essex Regiment at Halstead on 11 January 1898, aged 18 years. He served with the regiment in South Africa, November 1899-August 1902 where he served with the 14th Mounted Infantry. Additionally awarded the King’s medal with two clasps. Served in India, August 1902-January 1910. Discharged having completed his period of service in January 1910. With copied service papers.
