James Alfred Rainbow was born in Lambeth, London, Surrey. A Butcher by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, he attested for regular service at Hounslow on 15 January 1889, aged 18 years, 5 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, January 1891-December 1896. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1896, he was recalled in November 1899 and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa, December 1899-February 1901. Rainbow was discharged on 14 January 1902. With copied service papers and roll extracts confirming clasps.
