Stephen Chopping was born in Wapping, London, Middlesex. A Carman by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Middlesex Regiment, he attested for regular service at Hounslow on 15 May 1891, aged 18 years. With the 2nd Battalion he served in Gibraltar, September 1892-February 1895 and the East Indies, February 1895-March 1899. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1899, he was recalled to the Colours in November and served in South Africa, December 1899-August 1902. Discharged 14 May 1903. With copied service papers and roll extracts - all clasps confirmed. Note: ‘Cape Colony’ was a late award to the regiment and the clasp is often found out of place.
