Charles Harmsworth was born in London. A Brushmaker by occupation, he attested for the Royal Irish Fusiliers at London on 17 April 1889, aged 18 years, 11 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in East Indies, September 1890-January 1896 and Burma, January 1896-April 1897. Transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1897. Recalled to the Colours in October 1899, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion and served in South Africa, October 1899-April 1902. Discharged as medically unfit on 14 July 1902.
