William Instone was born in Birmingham. A Groom by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Birmingham on 13 December 1889, aged 18 years, 9 months. With the R.H.A. he served in India, February 1891-December 1897 and South Africa, February 1900-October 1901. In South Africa he served with ‘M’ Battery. Two sections of the battery served with the Flying Column at the relief of Mafeking. Discharged 1 April 1902. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
