William Russell was born in Dumbarton, Scotland. A Vanman by occupation and a member of the 2nd Brigade Scottish Division Reserve, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Leith Fort on 18 June 1888, aged 23 years, 8 months. He served at Home with the 17th Company Scottish Division R.G.A. until transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1895. Recalled in December 1899, he served in South Africa with the 15th Company Scottish Division R.G.A., December 1899-April 1901 (renumbered 91st Company in 1902). He was discharged on 13 August 1901. With copied service papers and roll extract.
