William Lucas was born in Pusey, Devizes, Wiltshire. A Miller by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Christchurch on 1 January 1892, aged 18 years, 3 months. He served in South Africa with the 61st Battery R.F.A. (Howitzers), November 1899-April 1900, being accidentally wounded in the left arm at Spion Kop on 26 January 1900. Served in India with the 44th Battery, February 1908-November 1909. Attained the rank of Battery Sergeant-Major with the 5th London Brigade R.F.A. in November 1909. He claimed his discharge on 31 May 1913. With copied service papers.
