Alma John Hales was born in Marylebone, London. A Silver Polisher by occupation and a member of the 4th Middlesex Regiment (Militia), he attested for the Royal Artillery at London on 26 February 1896, aged 18 years, 6 months. With the 76th Battery R.F.A. he served in South Africa, January 1900-March 1904 and was awarded the Queen’s medal with six clasps and the King’s medal with two. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1902 and discharged in February 1908. With copied service papers and roll extract.
