George Denton was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. A Carter by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Huddersfield on 28 March 1889, aged 18 years, 4 months. He served with the Field Artillery in India, February 1891-February 1897 when he was transferred to the Army Reserve. Recalled in October 1899, he served in South Africa with the 79th Battery R.F.A., November 1899-March 1902. He was discharged in March 1902 having completed his period of service. Several times imprisoned during his military career. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
