Charles Douglas Carpendale was born in 1874, the son of the Rev. William Henry Carpendale. He entered the Royal Navy in January 1887; Lieutenant (five first) and awarded the Ryder Memorial Prize. Served in Mombassa with a Naval Brigade, 1895 and awarded the East and West Africa Medal for Mwele. Served as Flag Captain of the 5th (late 3rd ) Cruiser Squadron, 1911-12. With the 2nd Cruiser Squadron, 1912-13 and at the Naval Ordnance Department, 1914. Served in the Great War and was awarded the C.B. in 1918. Promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1921, he was placed on the Retired List in 1923 and attained the rank of Vice-Admiral in 1926. Was Controller, Administrative Division of the B.B.C., 1923-35 and Deputy Director-General of the Corporation, 1935-38. Knighted in 1932. Latterly living at Holme Close, Pinkney’s Green, Maidenhead, Berkshire, he died in 1968. With some copied research.
