Archibald White was born on 19 September 1818. M.D. Edinburgh 1839, L.R.C.S. Edinburgh 1839. Appointed Assistant Surgeon in the Indian Medical Service on 31 January 1841. Served in Afghanistan in 1842 with the force under General Pollock forcing the Khaibar Pass. When on furlough in 1851 he volunteered to serve in an expedition in search of Sir John Franklin, but permission to do so was refused. Promoted to Surgeon in April 1855 and Surgeon-Major in January 1861. Served in the First Sikh War and operations in Burma, 1852-53; then in operations in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny, 1857-58, including operations in Oudh. He retired from the service on 7 March 1864. He died in Edinburgh on 15 March 1882. With photograph of the recipient and some copied research.
