Paris; retired from the army to join the Cabinet des Médailles at the Bibliothèque Nationale, 1800, where he worked until his death, latterly as head; author of the 16-volume standard reference Description de médailles antique, Grecques et Romaines (1806-37) and inventor of the gradiated scale of 19 concentric circles commonly used to measure the most common diameters of coins and medals up to, and including, the 1920s
