M.C. London Gazette 10 January 1917: ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He assumed command of and led his company with great courage and initiative. He set a splendid example throughout.’
Forbes Sutherland was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 30 October 1915; Lieutenant, 1 July 1917; Adjutant and Acting Captain, 19 January 1919. He was wounded on 23 April 1917, in the attack on the chemical works at Roeux, near the village of Fampoux, when the 7th Battalion suffered their greatest losses of the entire war.
