Alexander Grubb served in the New Zealand War of 1863-64, campaigns of Waikato and Taurango, and was present at the actions of Gatepan and Te Ranga. He was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 16 September 1864 (Despatch of Colonel H. H. Greer, Commanding Taurangra District, dated 27 June 1864): ‘Lt. Grubb, R.A., whose coolness and excellent practise with the 6 pounder Armstrong under his command, when under fire, during the action, and subsequently on the retreating Maories, when they had got beyond the reach of the infantry, was admirable.’ Grubb retired as Lieutenant Colonel in July 1884.
