George James Gillies was born in April 1837 and entered the Royal Artillery in October 1857. He served in Canada with the 10th Brigade, Royal Artillery, and subsequently in India with “D” Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. He retired in July 1885 with the Honorary rank of Colonel.
