M.M., London Gazette, 21 October, 1916. Awarded for special distinction in the action at Abd on 9 August 1916. 'Privates A.S.C. Smith and J.W. Smith for volunteering and remaining behind under a heavy fire and bringing in Sergt. C. Hudson dangerously wounded. This took place at night when the troops had orders to retire.' (Ref Col. Cheape’s Despatch dated 11 August1916)
Both men were awarded the M.M. for rescuing Sgt. Hudson who later died of his wounds. In addition both men were awarded the Cross of St. George, 4th class, London Gazette, 15 February, 1917.
Shoeing-Smith Adhelm Stewart Courtney Smith died of wounds at Alexandria on 4 May 1917.
