Phillip Eustace Besant served in the Sudan campaign of 1898 as Orderly Officer to the General Officer Commanding the Line of Communications; in South Africa, Transvaal, operations March 1901 to 31 May 1902. As Captain in the 1st Battalion, Besant landed at Boulogne on 22 August 1914. He was wounded in the leg during the retreat from Mons on 26 August at Le Cateau and was made prisoner of war at Chateau de Oex, Switzerland, until the end of the war.
