John Sands was born in 1792, in the Parish of St Mary’s, Nottingham, and was a framework knitter before enlisting into the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Foot Guards. At Waterloo he served in Lieutenent-Colonel C. F. Canning’s company, and was wounded in the battle. He was discharged in 1820, and admitted to pension at Chelsea Hospital on 11 November 1851, when it was noted that he had been ‘Wounded in the right leg at Chateau Hougoumont - Waterloo’. He died of typhoid fever at Swinton, Nottingham, on 13 September 1871, aged 79.
