Frank Icke was born in Newport, Shropshire and enlisted in the 17th Lancers in May 1878, aged 18 years. In his subsequent career of 12 years with the Colours, he witnessed active service out in South Africa in 1879 and temporarily held the rank of Lance-Corporal. Icke was discharged to the Army Reserve in May 1890, having latterly served out in India as a Shoeing-Smith.
