Awarded for patrols carried out in the unsettled portion of the Obibio and Kwa country between November 1904 and February 1905, the whole under the command of Major (afterwards Marshal of the Royal Air Force) H. M. “Boom” Trenchard, D.S.O., Royal Scots Fusiliers, then acting as second-in-command of the Southern Nigeria Regiment.
According to Magor, ‘Trenchard had cleaned up the Southern Nigeria Regiment by prohibiting gambling, womanising, slovenliness and drunkenness.’
