I.D.S.M., London Gazette, 30 December, 1941 (Sudan and Eritrea). 'During the night 20121 March when his section was employed on fortification of FORT DOLOGORODOC under sporadic bombardment he gave a fine example to his men and was instrumental in producing a large output of work under difficult conditions. Again on the night 25/26 March when his section was engaged on work on the road block in CHEREN gorge under heavy shell and mortar fire, he showed exceptional drive, ability and fearlessness. His courageous conduct was an inspiration to those working under him.'
