Richard Day was born in 1781 at Hungerford, Berkshire. In 1803 he joined the Wiltshire Militia and served at various stations around England including the guarding of a large prisoner-of-war camp at Normans Cross. In 1809 he joined the 95th Foot and served in the expedition against Walcheren. At Waterloo he served in the 2nd Company commanded by Captain Joseph Logan. He was discharged on 25 June, 1817, suffering from deafness.
