Robert Burton was born in Winchester, Hampshire, and enlisted there on 12 October, 1857, at the age of 14 years. He served as a Bugler until promoted Corporal in September 1866, and Sergeant in May of the following year. Having completed his first period of engagement, he re-engaged at Chester in October 1868 and was appointed Bugle Major in May 1873, Colour Sergeant in December 1874, and Quartermaster Sergeant at the Rifle Depot in September 1878. Burton continued in that rank until 24 June, 1884, serving latterly with the Hampshire Militia. He was awarded the Long Service medal, with gratuity, on 1 July, 1880, and the Meritorious Service medal, with an annuity of £10, on 7 February, 1916. Sold with copy service papers.
