William Samuel Grinter was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1866, when his Father was serving with the Rifle Brigade during the Fenian troubles at that time (see lot 397). He enlisted for the Rifle Brigade at Rawal Pindi in December 1880, aged fourteen years, at which time his Father was stationed in India. He served in South Africa with the 5th battalion (Tower Hamlets Militia) and was one of only three men of the battalion to receive the clasp for ‘Transvaal’. His Long Service medal was awarded in January 1899, and he was discharged at Woolwich on 1 December, 1902. Sold with copy service papers.
