The 90th Light Infantry formed part of the 1st Relief Force under Sir Henry Havelock. After returning from the Crimean War, William Alder was tried by Court Martial for some misdemeanour and sentenced to a period of imprisonment at Portsmouth. He was released, however, to serve the remainder of his sentence onboard ship to India where, after his service at the Defence of Lucknow, he died on 2 November 1858.
