One officer and 22 men of the Royal Highlanders served in the Mounted Infantry Camel Regiment at Abu Klea.

William Major was born in Belfast, Ireland, and enlisted at Leeds on 19 January 1882, aged 19. He served in the Eastern Soudan in 1884, in the Nile Expedition 1884-85, and in operations upon the the Upper Nile 1885-86, including the battle of Ginnis on 30 December 1885, where he was severely wounded by a gun shot in the right arm and shoulder. He was awarded the Egypt Medal with clasps for El-Teb-Tamaai, The Nile 1884-85 and Abu Klea, and the Bronze Star. Sold with copy service papers.
