D.C.M. London Gazette 3 September 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in charge of a post of forty men and two Hotchkiss guns. The troops on his flanks had withdrawn, but, having received no orders to retire, he held his post for six hours against vastly superior numbers of the enemy, until nearly surrounded, when he fought his way back over a canal, bringing all his party with him. He was severely wounded early in the engagement, but his coolness and courage did much to maintain the steadiness of his men in an action against overwhelming odds.’
