Albert John Willis was born near Exeter. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Devonshire Regiment at Exeter on 19 September 1892, aged 19 years, 5 months. He attained the rank of Lance-Sergeant in March 1899 and was transferred to the Army Reserve in September 1899. The following month he was recalled, and at his former rank was posted to the 2nd Battalion and served in South Africa, 20 October 1899-25 March 1901. With the battalion he saw action at Colenso, 15 December 1899, and was slightly wounded. The next day he was promoted to Sergeant. Willis was transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1902 and discharged on 18 July 1903. Sold with copied service papers and details of the action at Colenso.
