Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), Edward the Confessor, Sovereign and Hammer Cross mule type, Brihtwi, Malmesbury, BRiHPi ON MELME, reverse with crescent and bar in second and third quarters of reverse cross respectively, 1.26 gms (Freeman, BAR 145 —). With some corrosion on obverse, and a little weak in places, otherwise about very fine, excessively rare, and probably the only surviving specimen (£1,000-1,500)
This lot was sold as part of a special collection, The Collection of Anglo-Saxon and Earlier Hammered Coins formed by the late Captain 'Peter' Arnot.
