Henry Hall was born at Godalming, Surrey, and joined the 69th Foot at Reading on 20 September 1824, aged 17. In January 1825 he volunteered to the 2nd Foot and was discharged on 31 October 1840, owing to the effect of wounds, his total service being 15 years 267 days. He served in the East Indies from 7 June 1825 to 30 November 1838, in Scinde and Afghanistan from 1 December 1838 to 29 February 1840, and in the East Indies again from 1 March to 30 October, 1840. He was present at the capture of Ghuznee and Khelat, being severely wounded in the right thigh at the storming of Khelat on 13 November 1839.
